Tips for Winter Driving

With BC preparing for its second snowstorm of the winter season, we are reminded that we must take extra caution when driving. As the number of car accidents increase due to hazardous driving conditions during this time of year, drivers must slow down and allow for extra travel time. Read the tips below to ensure you reach your destination safe and sound.

Drivers:

Begin with having a full tank of gas and winter tires that are in good condition. Ensure your headlights and brakes work well and have enough windshield wiper fluid. Give yourself extra time when planning on driving to a destination so you don’t feel the need to rush. Scrape the snow off your entire vehicle and let your windows defrost. This includes removing all of the snow off the roof of the vehicle to avoid the risk of it falling onto your windows and obstructing your view while driving.

Once you are on the road, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and be careful when passing or changing lanes. If your vehicle is a 4-wheel or an all-wheel, please keep in mind that although your vehicle is high performance in the snow, that does not change the stopping power, slow down. Be aware of black ice as it is transparent and can be hard to see.

In case of an emergency, plan ahead and ensure your vehicle is equipped with the following:

  • Shovel
  • Flashlight
  • Traffic cones
  • Reflective vest
  • Jumper cables
  • Spare tire
  • Tire iron and jack
  • Food and Water
  • Emergency blanket
  • First aid kit
  • Tool Kit

It is recommended that before heading out, drivers check the forecast and go to DriveBC.ca for any road or highway closures. Keep in mind, some areas might require vehicles to have chains over their winter tires. You can see which areas at the BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s Regional Transportation Management Centre.

Pedestrians:

This time of year can be just as dangerous for pedestrians as it is for drivers as sidewalks and walkways can be icy. If you are going to be on foot, be sure to be wear winter boots that have a good grip and are waterproof. Also wear bright colours and reflective gear if you are going to be walking late at night. This helps drivers identify pedestrians on the road sooner, giving them more reaction time. Protect yourself, cross the road using extreme caution and don’t assume a vehicle will or can stop.
