Vancouver is a busy city and the back alley road system is part of our traffic grid. These out-of-the-way roads can be incredibly dangerous, something P.T. knows all too well after being hit in 2013 by a driver who was backing out of an alley onto Helmcken Street in Vancouver’s west end.
The impact was significant, and in the end P.T.’s car was a total write-off. P.T. sustained various injuries but what really impacted the next year of his life was the damage to his wrist and the soft tissue damage to his thoracic spine (mid-back).
“Even though the driver came out of an alley way, the crash was pretty severe. I am lucky that my accident wasn’t fatal. My custom car – a 2000 MR2 Spyder – was a complete write-off. I had a love of driving rare cars, and now I just have a hard time driving. I have a lot of anxiety.”
Safety Tip: Do you know the road rules for alleys? The speed limit in a back alley is 20 km/hr maximum. Drivers must treat the lane exit like a stop sign. When exiting a lane, you are required to come to a complete stop before the sidewalk, and yield to pedestrians and traffic before proceeding. P.T. spent the next year in rehab, dealing with chiropractic treatments, physiotherapy and massage therapy. Unable to work and in constant pain, he struggled to regain his old life. Prior to the accident, P.T.’s dream was to work in law enforcement and despite his injuries he never wavered from this goal. Warnett Hallen’s support meant that P.T. could focus on his recovery and his future, and not on legal and financial issues.
“The focus of this case was to get P.T. the necessary medical support in place”, reports Manjot Hallen, personal injury lawyer at the Kitsilano based law firm. “He needed a new family doctor and a series of specialists to help him through rehab. He was unable to work for a length of time, but we wanted to help him pursue his career of working in law enforcement. He is now working full time and managing any lingering pain with healthy living, keeping strong and getting massage treatments to manage any back pain.”
